Semaglutide linked to 18% lower mortality, 9% fewer hospitalizations vs. dulaglutide in hemodialysis patients
Background
Patients with diabetes and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring hemodialysis face high rates of cardiovascular events and mortality. While GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) like semaglutide have demonstrated cardiovascular and renal benefits in broader populations (e.g., FLOW, SELECT trials), comparative effectiveness data for specific GLP-1RAs in the complex hemodialysis setting has been limited. Clinicians often face equipoise when choosing between agents like semaglutide, dulaglutide, or liraglutide for these vulnerable patients, lacking real-world evidence to guide optimal selection for improved outcomes. This study addresses that gap.
