Mitochondria-Targeted Nanotechnology Shows Promise for Heart Disease Treatment
Mitochondria-targeted nanotechnology in cardiovascular diseases: a review of recent advances
Background
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including myocardial infarction and heart failure, remain leading causes of mortality worldwide. A key contributor to their progression is mitochondrial dysfunction, where the cell's powerhouses fail, leading to cellular damage and death. Traditional therapies often lack specificity, leading to off-target effects. This review addresses the recent advances in using nanotechnology to specifically target mitochondria for therapeutic intervention in CVDs.
