Pilot Study: Phenylbutyrate and Vitamin D as Adjunctive TB Therapy
Clinical Trial of Phenylbutyrate and Vitamin D in Tuberculosis (TB)
Background
Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) is a severe infectious disease requiring prolonged treatment with antibiotics. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the immune response, acting via the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) present in activated macrophages to induce the expression and release of LL-37, a human antimicrobial peptide vital for killing MTB (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). This pilot study aimed to investigate whether adjunctive phenylbutyrate and vitamin D can improve treatment outcomes and immune response in newly diagnosed pulmonary TB patients.
