An editorial in Annals of Pharmacotherapy by Belcourt, Ly and White of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy describes manufacturers selling vials of semaglutide and tirzepatide to consumers without a prescription “for research purposes only”.
The abstract says these sellers often omit the supplies and knowledge needed to dissolve and inject the drug, and that bypassing prescribers makes it harder to prevent drug interactions or monitor patients. The paper was published online on September 17, 2024 and in print in May 2025 (volume 59, issue 5, pages 485-490). Its abstract does not describe purchase tests or laboratory analysis, and PubMed classes it as an editorial rather than a research article, so we tier it as a documented record.
