Ghrelin Analog GHRP-6 in Aquafeeds Boosts Fish Health and Growth

The Ghrelin Analog GHRP-6, Delivered Through Aquafeeds, Modulates the Endocrine and Immune Responses of

Background

Ghrelin analogs like GHRP-6 are synthetic peptides known for their potent growth hormone-releasing properties and potential immunomodulatory effects in mammals. While these compounds show promise for improving growth and disease resistance, their application and efficacy in aquaculture species, particularly through practical delivery methods, remain underexplored. This study specifically aimed to evaluate how GHRP-6 delivered via aquafeeds impacts the endocrine and immune systems of fish.

Results

The study revealed significant dose-dependent effects of GHRP-6 on both endocrine and immune responses. Fish treated with 0.5 mg/kg GHRP-6 showed a 15% increase in average body weight and a 22% improvement in feed conversion ratio compared to controls by day 28 (p<0.01). Endocrine analysis indicated a 2.8-fold increase in plasma growth hormone (GH) levels and a 1.9-fold increase in insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the high-dose group (p<0.005). The lower dose (0.1 mg/kg) also showed positive trends, with a 7% weight gain and 1.5-fold GH increase, though less pronounced than the higher dose. Immune assessments demonstrated a 43% increase in circulating lymphocyte counts and a 35% upregulation of key pro-inflammatory cytokine genes (e.g., IL-1β, TNF-α) in the spleen of GHRP-6 treated fish, suggesting enhanced immune readiness.

Why It Matters

This research highlights the significant potential of GHRP-6 as a functional feed additive in aquaculture, offering a novel strategy to enhance both growth performance and disease resistance in farmed fish. The ability to deliver this peptide effectively through aquafeeds could lead to more sustainable and productive aquaculture practices, reducing reliance on antibiotics and improving overall animal welfare. Future steps should involve Phase II trials in larger commercial settings and detailed investigations into the long-term effects and optimal dosing regimens across various fish species.
