Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, particularly when it progresses to metastatic disease, spreading beyond the primary tumor site. While localized treatments like radiotherapy can effectively manage primary or oligometastatic lesions, inducing a systemic anti-tumor immune response, known as the abscopal effect, is a rare but highly sought-after phenomenon. This effect involves radiation at one site triggering regression of distant, un-irradiated tumors, suggesting a robust immune system activation. This Phase II study aimed to investigate if combining conventional radiotherapy with the immunomodulator thymalfasin could enhance this elusive abscopal effect in heavily pretreated patients battling metastatic NSCLC, addressing a critical unmet need for improved systemic control.
