Ultrasound-guided pingyangmycin sclerotherapy reduces oral/maxillofacial venous malformation volume by 82% and eliminates discomfort.
Background
Deep-seated oral and maxillofacial venous malformations (VMs) are challenging to treat due to their complex anatomy and potential for functional impairment. Traditional surgical excision can be invasive, leading to significant morbidity, while other therapies may lack efficacy for deep lesions. Intralesional sclerotherapy is a primary treatment, but precise delivery and monitoring are crucial for deep-seated lesions. This study explores pingyangmycin delivered via portable ultrasound guidance as a less invasive, outpatient solution to address these treatment gaps.
Study Design
This retrospective observational study included 49 outpatients with symptomatic deep-seated venous malformations in the oral and maxillofacial region. Patients received portable ultrasound-guided pingyangmycin sclerotherapy between August 2023 and September 2025. The average number of treatment sessions per patient was 2 (range, 1-5). Primary endpoints included lesion volume reduction, assessed via ultrasound measurements, and symptom improvement, quantified using a 0-10 numeric rating scale (NRS) for global discomfort. Complications were also recorded during follow-up.
