Background
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting structures of teeth, often exacerbated by systemic conditions like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). T2DM impairs immune function and wound healing, making individuals more susceptible to severe periodontal destruction. Current diagnostics primarily rely on clinical parameters, but there's a need for reliable biomarkers to assess disease activity and treatment response, especially in diabetic patients. Prolactin, a hormone known for its immunomodulatory effects, has been implicated in various inflammatory conditions, making its role in periodontal inflammation, particularly in the context of T2DM, a relevant area of investigation.
