Background
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, causes irreversible intestinal damage and significantly elevates the risk of colorectal cancer. Current treatments often involve broad immunosuppressants with considerable side effects, highlighting an urgent need for targeted, safer therapeutic strategies. Sanguisorba officinalis extracts have traditionally shown anti-inflammatory properties, but the specific active compounds and their precise mechanisms against intestinal inflammation have remained largely uncharacterized. This study aimed to structurally elucidate an active polysaccharide from this plant and investigate its potential as a novel IBD therapeutic.
