Can semaglutide influence tumor biomarkers? Insight from a clinical case.

Background

GLP-1 receptor agonists like semaglutide are highly effective for type 2 diabetes and obesity, improving glycemic control and promoting weight loss. Elevated tumor biomarkers such as CA 19-9 and CA-125 typically raise suspicion for pancreatic, biliary, or ovarian malignancies, often leading to extensive and invasive diagnostic workups. Understanding if semaglutide can transiently affect these markers is crucial to prevent unnecessary patient anxiety and medical procedures.

Study Design

This clinical case report details a 61-year-old female patient undergoing Semaglutide treatment. She was referred for gynecological consultation due to suspected adnexal cysts following an MRI for a functional defecation disorder. The initial workup included a gynecological examination and transvaginal ultrasound. Subsequently, tumor biomarker testing for CA 19-9 and CA-125 was performed. Following initial elevated results, the patient underwent further investigations to rule out neoplastic origins, specifically involving the pancreas or biliary tract. Biomarker levels were re-evaluated at one month and two months post-initial elevation to monitor their trajectory.
