Online Semaglutide Information Too Complex for Most Patients
Background
Semaglutide medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are widely prescribed for conditions such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. Effective patient education is crucial for medication adherence and understanding, yet the readability and understandability of online health information often fall short. This study aimed to assess whether online patient education materials on semaglutide are written at an appropriate reading level for the general public.
Results
The study evaluated 61 unique online resources and found significant issues with readability and understandability. The median SMOG score, indicating reading grade level, was a staggering 13th grade level, while the median Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) score was at a College level. Critically, fewer than 10% of the evaluated online materials were written at or below the recommended 8th grade reading level for patient education. Understandability, as measured by PEMAT, also showed room for improvement with a median score of 62%, suggesting patients may struggle to process the information. Despite these readability challenges, the overall quality of the information, assessed by DISCERN, was relatively high, with a median score of 4 out of 5.
Why It Matters
This study highlights a significant barrier to effective patient education for widely used medications like semaglutide. Most online semaglutide patient education is inaccessible to the average person, potentially hindering informed decision-making, medication adherence, and overall health literacy. Improving the readability and understandability of these materials is crucial for empowering patients. The findings strongly suggest that online patient education on semaglutide needs to be rewritten to meet the recommended 8th grade reading level to ensure equitable access to health information. Future efforts should focus on developing and disseminating simplified, high-quality resources.
