TikTok's Influence on GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Trends and Public Health Perceptions
Background
GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) like Ozempic and Wegovy have become highly popular for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity, leading to widespread discussion. Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, are increasingly shaping public opinion and health behaviors. This study investigates the scope, content, and impact of GLP-1 RA discussions on TikTok, aiming to understand how social media trends influence public perception and potential misuse.
Results
The analysis revealed that weight loss was the predominant theme, featuring in 72% of all GLP-1 RA-related videos. Alarmingly, 21% of the analyzed content contained significant misinformation, primarily concerning off-label use, unverified sources for medication, and exaggerated claims of efficacy without mentioning side effects. Engagement metrics showed a stark disparity: videos from non-HCPs garnered an average of 4.1-fold more likes and 2.8-fold more shares than those from verified medical professionals. The single most important finding was that videos promoting rapid, often unrealistic, weight loss outcomes received an average of 380,000 views, significantly outpacing educational content from HCPs, which averaged only 95,000 views per video. Furthermore, user comments indicated a 55% increase in inquiries about obtaining GLP-1 RAs without a prescription or medical consultation, compared to comments on educational posts.
Why It Matters
The profound influence of social media on public health discourse and patient behavior is a critical concern, particularly for highly sought-after medications like GLP-1 RAs. This research underscores an urgent need for healthcare systems, regulatory bodies, and pharmaceutical companies to develop proactive strategies to combat misinformation and enhance the visibility of evidence-based information on platforms like TikTok. Understanding these digital trends is essential for safeguarding public health, preventing medication misuse, and ensuring informed patient decisions. Future initiatives should explore collaborative partnerships with social media platforms to promote verified health content and educate users on identifying credible sources.
