Real-world study initiated for Tirzepatide outcomes in Pakistani adults with obesity, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes
Background
Despite Tirzepatide's approval for type 2 diabetes and obesity, real-world data on its effectiveness and safety in South Asian populations, particularly in Pakistan, remains scarce. This gap limits clinicians' ability to optimize treatment strategies for patients in these regions, where the prevalence of obesity, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes is significant. Understanding how Tirzepatide performs in routine clinical care, considering local dietary habits, genetic factors, and healthcare practices, is crucial for informing evidence-based guidelines and improving patient outcomes.
Study Design
This multicentre, prospective, observational study will follow 330 adults initiating Tirzepatide as part of their routine care across ten diabetes and endocrinology centres in Pakistan. Participants are grouped into three cohorts based on baseline glycemic status: obesity without diabetes, prediabetes with obesity, and type 2 diabetes with obesity. The study does not alter treatment decisions; physicians determine Tirzepatide dose and duration. Assessments occur at baseline, Weeks 12-14, and Weeks 24-26, measuring changes in HbA1c (diabetes cohort) and body weight (obesity/prediabetes cohorts), along with blood pressure, cholesterol, adherence, and side effects.
