Tirzepatide pilot trial investigates efficacy for central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) treatment

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is a type of permanent scarring hair loss with limited effective treatment options. Current management often relies on therapies extrapolated from other conditions, which may not adequately address the underlying fibrotic and inflammatory processes specific to CCCA. This pilot trial aims to explore whether tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, can offer a novel therapeutic approach by influencing disease activity and gene expression related to scarring in the scalp.

This pilot clinical trial will enroll adult participants with active CCCA. Each participant will self-inject tirzepatide once weekly for a duration of 12 months. The study design is single-arm, with participants serving as their own controls, comparing results during treatment to baseline. Primary assessments include regular scalp examinations, standardized photographs, and comprehensive health assessments. Scalp biopsies will be performed at baseline and after 6 months of treatment to analyze changes in gene activity, particularly those associated with scarring. Blood tests and other safety monitoring will be conducted throughout the study.
