Digital Lifestyle Program to Assess Weight Maintenance After Stopping GLP-1 Medications
Background
Achieving substantial weight loss with GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) such as semaglutide and tirzepatide has transformed obesity management. However, a significant challenge remains in sustaining this weight loss once medication is discontinued, often leading to weight regain. This phenomenon highlights a critical gap in long-term weight management strategies, necessitating accessible and sustainable interventions beyond pharmacotherapy. Current standard-of-care often lacks structured support for this transition phase, leaving individuals vulnerable to regaining lost weight and associated health risks. This study aims to explore a scalable solution to bridge this gap.
Study Design
Researchers at Tufts University are initiating a 12-month, fully remote study to investigate the efficacy of a digital lifestyle program for weight maintenance post-GLP-1 cessation. Adults who have recently stopped a GLP-1 medication are eligible. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two arms: either receiving access to a digital lifestyle program or continuing with usual care. All participants will be provided with a Bluetooth scale for home-based weight tracking and will complete short online questionnaires several times throughout the year to assess eating behaviors, routines, and other relevant metrics. The primary endpoint is expected to be sustained weight loss over the 12-month period.
