SPARK Digital Platform Aims to Improve Gestational Diabetes Self-Management and Prevent Adverse Outcomes
Background
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a growing public health concern, posing risks for adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes, alongside increased long-term morbidity for both mother and child. Current management often involves frequent clinical visits for glucose monitoring and insulin adjustments, creating significant physical, psychological, and economic burdens. Study Design
This project describes a multi-centre randomized controlled trial (RCT) designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel mobile health (mHealth) platform, SPARK, in women diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) in South Eastern Sweden. Participants are randomized into either a control or an intervention group. All women receive standard care, while the intervention group additionally receives support through the SPARK platform, focusing on healthy eating, physical activity, and glycaemic control. Primary pregnancy outcomes include glycaemic control, diet, physical activity, and metabolic/inflammatory biomarkers measured at gestational week 36-37, as well as adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Secondary outcomes extend to cardiometabolic risk, physical activity, and healthy eating behaviors one-year postpartum.
