Liraglutide Biosimilar Trial Aims to Match Victoza® Efficacy and Safety in Type 2 Diabetes Management

Study to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Liraglutide in the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

Background

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion, leading to hyperglycemia. Current treatments often involve oral medications like metformin, but many patients require additional therapies to achieve adequate glycemic control. Liraglutide, a GLP-1 analogue, addresses this by activating the GLP-1R, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion, inhibiting glucagon, and reducing food intake. As a well-established therapy, the development of biosimilar versions of liraglutide is crucial for increasing patient access and reducing healthcare costs. This study sets out to compare a generic liraglutide injection against the reference product, Victoza®.

Study Design

This 26-week clinical trial was designed to compare a generic liraglutide injection against Victoza® (brand-name liraglutide) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants were individuals whose condition was inadequately controlled by oral metformin alone. The primary endpoints for comparison included the effectivity on glycaemic control, overall safety, and immunogenicity profiles between the two liraglutide formulations. The study aimed to determine if the generic liraglutide injection could achieve comparable therapeutic outcomes to the established brand-name drug.
