Exercise and Protein Supplementation Project to Investigate Synergistic Effects on Age-Related Sarcopenia

Exercise and Nutrition Interventions in Age-related Sarcopenia

Background

Age-related sarcopenia is a prevalent, progressive skeletal muscle disorder characterized by an accelerated loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function, significantly increasing the risk of falls, frailty, and mortality in older adults. Current strategies often involve either exercise or nutritional interventions in isolation, but the synergistic potential of combining diverse exercise modalities with targeted protein supplementation remains an area requiring robust investigation. While resistance training is well-established for preserving muscle mass and strength, and adequate protein intake is critical for muscle protein synthesis, the optimal integrated approach to maximize anabolic responses and functional improvements in sarcopenic populations is not fully elucidated. This project aims to address this critical gap by exploring a comprehensive, multi-modal intervention.

Study Design

This project, registered as a recruiting clinical trial (NCT03649698) by Universitaire Ziekenhuizen, is designed to investigate the synergistic effects of a combined intervention on individuals with age-related sarcopenia. The study protocol outlines the implementation of both Aerobic and Resistance type Exercise regimens, integrated with specific Protein Supplementation. The primary objective is to evaluate the impact of this combined approach on key health parameters, including Body Composition, Musculoskeletal Functioning, Nutritional Status, and Quality of Life. The trial aims to enroll participants to assess how these structured physical activity and dietary interventions interact to improve physical capabilities and overall well-being in an aging population.

Results

This project is currently recruiting participants (NCT03649698), and as such, no findings or results are available yet. The study aims to collect and analyze data on the synergistic effects of exercise and protein supplementation on various outcomes related to age-related sarcopenia.
