Liraglutide in Type 1 Diabetes Hypothesized to Improve Glucose Control, Insulin Sensitivity, and Body Composition
Background
Managing Type 1 diabetes (T1D) primarily relies on exogenous insulin, yet patients frequently face challenges with glycemic control, weight gain, and elevated cardiovascular risk. Current therapeutic approaches often fall short in comprehensively addressing these multifaceted issues. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, such as liraglutide, are well-established for Type 2 diabetes (T2D) due to their ability to stimulate glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppress glucagon, and promote weight loss. However, their specific impact on crucial parameters like abdominal fat, insulin sensitivity, and satiety within the T1D population, especially when combined with a basal/bolus insulin regimen, remains largely unexplored. This trial was designed to investigate these potential benefits and bridge that significant knowledge gap.
