Liraglutide's short-term kidney effects in Type 2 Diabetes patients investigated for nephroprotection
Background
Diabetic nephropathy is a severe microvascular complication of Type 2 Diabetes and a leading cause of end-stage renal disease. Current treatments primarily focus on glycemic and blood pressure control, but often fail to halt disease progression. Recent preclinical studies in rodents have indicated that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues, like liraglutide, may offer direct renoprotective effects beyond their glucose-lowering actions. However, the specific mechanisms and short-term physiological impacts of these agents on human kidney function, particularly on kidney injury markers, remain to be fully elucidated in a clinical setting. This study aims to bridge that gap by investigating these effects in human patients.
