Animal-assisted therapy review shows beneficial effects on depression and cognitive function in Korean older adults
Background
Korea is rapidly becoming a super-aged society, facing increased burdens from mental health issues like cognitive decline, depression, and dementia among older adults. Traditional interventions often fall short, necessitating preventive and therapeutic approaches that address decreased quality of life and rising suicide rates. The human–animal bond (HAB) and animal-assisted therapy (AAT) are emerging as promising strategies, leveraging the psychological and emotional stability derived from human-animal interactions to support mental health.
