Background

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) represent a significant challenge in intensive care units, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates. Rapid and effective antimicrobial therapy is crucial, yet the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens complicates treatment decisions. Despite the availability of newer, long-acting antibiotics like Dalbavancin (a lipoglycopeptide antibiotic with activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA), there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding how critical care specialists integrate such agents into their real-world treatment algorithms for complex BSI cases.

Results

The survey revealed that 78% of critical care specialists reported using Dalbavancin for Gram-positive BSIs, primarily for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in patients with contraindications to vancomycin or requiring outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT). Specialists noted a perceived 43% reduction in average length of hospital stay for patients transitioned to Dalbavancin compared to those remaining on conventional IV antibiotics (p<0.001).
