Understanding the Unmet Need for New Anti-Obesity Therapies
Background
Obesity is a complex, chronic metabolic disease affecting hundreds of millions globally, significantly increasing the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. While lifestyle interventions remain foundational, pharmacotherapy plays a crucial role for many patients struggling with weight management. Despite the availability of several anti-obesity medications (AOMs), their efficacy, safety profiles, and accessibility often present significant limitations, leading to suboptimal outcomes for a large patient population. This review specifically addresses why the current therapeutic landscape for obesity remains insufficient and highlights the urgent need for novel, more effective treatment strategies.
