Carbetocin Compared to Standard Treatment for Preventing Postpartum Bleeding After C-Section
Carbetocin Versus Oxytocin and Ergometrine for the Prevention of Postpartum Haemorrhage Following Caesarean Section
Background
Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide, often occurring after a Caesarean section. Effective prevention strategies using uterotonic agents are crucial to reduce blood loss and associated complications like anemia. This Phase 4 clinical trial aimed to directly compare the efficacy and safety of carbetocin against the established combination of oxytocin and Methergine (methyl ergometrine) in preventing PPH following C-section, addressing the knowledge gap of which uterotonic regimen offers superior outcomes in this high-risk population.
Study Design
Population
Women undergoing Caesarean section at high risk of postpartum haemorrhage.
Intervention
Carbetocin administered to prevent postpartum haemorrhage.
Comparator
Oxytocin and Methergine (methyl ergometrine) combination.
Outcome
Efficacy and safety in preventing postpartum haemorrhage after C-section.
