Hallux valgus bunion pain linked to CGRP expression, not deformity, identifying CGRP as a therapeutic target
Joint capsule pathology as a contributor to pain in hallux valgus: a histological study.
Background
Hallux valgus (HV), commonly known as a bunion, causes significant pain, often localized to the medial aspect of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. While deformity severity is often assumed to drive pain, the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood, leading to suboptimal pain management strategies. This study aims to elucidate the histological and molecular contributors to HV pain, specifically focusing on the medial capsule and its role beyond just structural changes. Understanding these mechanisms could reveal novel therapeutic targets.
