Tirzepatide Study to Map Gastric Emptying and Fasting Guidelines
A Study to Evaluate the Effect of Fasting Duration and Tirzepatide Withholding on the Amount of Food and Fluid in the Stomach in Participants With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Participants With Overweight or Obesity Without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Background
Tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, is highly effective for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and obesity due to its impact on glucose metabolism and appetite suppression. A known side effect of GLP-1 agonists is delayed gastric emptying, which can lead to retained stomach contents even after prolonged fasting. This study aims to precisely quantify how fasting duration and temporary withholding of tirzepatide affect the amount of food and fluid remaining in the stomach.
Study Design
Population
Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and obesity.
Intervention
Tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, with varying fasting durations and temporary withholding.
Outcome
The primary outcome is to quantify the amount of food and fluid remaining in the stomach.
