Real-World Study Explores Oral Semaglutide's Impact on Type 2 Diabetes in India
Background
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels, posing a significant health burden globally, particularly in countries like India. While injectable glucose-lowering treatments are effective, adherence can be challenging for some patients. This study addresses the real-world effectiveness and clinical parameters associated with initiating once-daily oral semaglutide in adults with Type 2 Diabetes who are new to injectable therapies.

Results
While this real-world study involving 388 participants is completed, specific results are pending publication. However, based on extensive prior clinical trials, oral semaglutide is known to significantly improve glycemic control and body weight in patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Previous randomized controlled trials have demonstrated typical HbA1c reductions of 1.0% to 1.5% from baseline and body weight loss of 4 kg to 6 kg over 26-68 weeks of treatment. It is anticipated that this study will confirm similar positive outcomes in a diverse Indian population, reflecting the drug's efficacy in a real-world setting. > It is highly expected that oral semaglutide will demonstrate significant improvements in glycemic control, potentially showing an average HbA1c reduction of over 1%, and contribute to body weight reduction in patients with Type 2 Diabetes in India. The study is also likely to provide valuable insights into the practical aspects of initiating and maintaining oral semaglutide treatment, including adherence rates and patient-reported outcomes, which are crucial for long-term management in a diverse population.
