Semaglutide Trial to Prevent Diabetes After Kidney Transplants
Semaglutide for the Prevention Of Post-Transplant Diabetes Mellitus
Background
Post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a serious and common complication affecting a significant number of kidney transplant recipients (KTR), leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and reduced graft survival. Current strategies for preventing PTDM, which often involves immunosuppressive medications that can worsen glucose metabolism, are frequently insufficient, leaving many patients vulnerable to long-term health issues. This upcoming study aims to investigate whether oral semaglutide, a well-known GLP-1 receptor agonist, can effectively prevent the onset of PTDM in this high-risk population by improving metabolic control.
