Semaglutide Investigated for Fatty Liver Disease and Cirrhosis Treatment
A Research Study on How Semaglutide Works in People With Fatty Liver Disease and Liver Damage
Background
Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) is a severe form of fatty liver disease characterized by inflammation and liver cell damage, which can progress to fibrosis and cirrhosis. Currently, there are no approved pharmacological treatments for NASH, especially for patients who have already developed compensated liver cirrhosis, a stage where the liver is significantly scarred but still functions. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of semaglutide in patients with NASH who have progressed to compensated cirrhosis, addressing a critical unmet medical need in this vulnerable patient population.
