GLP-1 Agonists Linked to Hair Shedding, Especially with Rapid Weight Loss
Background
GLP-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs), such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, are highly effective medications for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity due to their glucose-regulating and appetite-suppressing effects. While generally well-tolerated, an increasing number of anecdotal reports suggest hair shedding as a potential side effect. The real-world prevalence and specific predictors of this hair shedding among GLP-1 RA users have remained largely unquantified and poorly understood.
Results
Of the 1,250 participants, a significant 28.5% reported experiencing hair shedding since initiating GLP-1 RA therapy. The most significant predictor of hair shedding was rapid weight loss, with individuals losing more than 10% of their initial body weight experiencing a 2.3-fold higher incidence (p<0.001) compared to those with less weight loss. Among those affected, 15.2% described their hair shedding as moderate to severe. Interestingly, the duration of GLP-1 RA use, up to 12 months, did not show a significant correlation with the prevalence or severity of shedding, suggesting that the effect might be more acute or linked to the initial phase of weight loss rather than prolonged exposure.
