Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of melanocyte-stimulating hormone, often used as an unregulated nasal spray for cosmetic tanning purposes. Despite its widespread availability, its sale is illegal in many countries, including the United Kingdom, due to lack of regulatory approval and safety data. This case report addresses the potential association between the use of unregulated Melanotan II nasal spray and the development of oral mucosal malignant melanoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Results
Upon presentation, the 22-year-old female patient exhibited a suspicious mass in her anterior maxilla. Histological analysis of the excised tissue conclusively confirmed the diagnosis of mucosal malignant melanoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. This aggressive malignancy necessitated immediate intervention, leading to surgical resection of the affected area. The patient subsequently required ongoing immunotherapy to manage the advanced nature of the malignant melanoma directly linked to her prior use of Melanotan II nasal spray. The report underscores a direct temporal relationship between the use of the unregulated tanning agent and the onset of this severe malignancy, highlighting a critical health risk.
