GLP-1 Agonists Linked to Increased Reporting of Depressed Mood and Suicidal Thoughts

Results

The analysis revealed a significantly higher reporting odds ratio (ROR) for both depressed mood and suicidal thoughts with GLP-1 RAs compared to other antidiabetic medications. For depressed mood, the ROR was 1.8 (95% CI: 1.7-1.9, p<0.001), indicating an 80% increased reporting odds. > The most striking finding was a 2.5-fold increased reporting odds for suicidal thoughts among patients using GLP-1 RAs compared to those on other antidiabetic medications (ROR 2.5, 95% CI: 2.3-2.7, p<0.001). This association was consistent across various individual GLP-1 RA compounds, including semaglutide and liraglutide, and persisted after adjusting for potential confounders. Overall, 0.05% of GLP-1 RA reports mentioned suicidal thoughts, compared to 0.02% for other antidiabetics, representing a 150% relative increase in reporting frequency.
