Tirzepatide Explored for Type 1 Diabetes with Obesity or Overweight
Background
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune condition characterized by the pancreas's inability to produce insulin, necessitating lifelong exogenous insulin administration. A significant and growing challenge is the comorbidity of obesity or overweight among individuals with T1D, which can exacerbate insulin resistance, complicate glycemic management, and heighten the risk of cardiovascular disease. While GLP-1 receptor agonists (like liraglutide or semaglutide) have demonstrated considerable benefits in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity by improving glucose control and promoting weight loss, their long-term efficacy and safety specifically in adults with T1D and concurrent obesity or overweight remain largely unexplored. This pivotal Phase 3 study aims to comprehensively evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, in this specific and underserved patient population.
