Background

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing global health concern, characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, often linked to insulin resistance and increased cardiovascular disease risk. For people living with HIV (PLWH), NAFLD is particularly prevalent and can be exacerbated by antiretroviral therapies and chronic inflammation, posing significant health challenges. Despite its prevalence, effective pharmacological treatments specifically for NAFLD in this vulnerable population remain limited, creating a critical unmet medical need. This Phase 2 pilot study aimed to evaluate the potential of semaglutide to reduce liver fat and improve metabolic health in PLWH with NAFLD.
