Imaging Study to Track Muscle and Bone Health in Diabetes Weight Loss
Background
Type 2 diabetes is often managed with weight loss drugs like GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) and GLP-1RA/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) co-agonists, which are highly effective. However, a significant concern with these medications is their potential to cause muscle loss, posing risks, especially for older adults or those prone to frailty and falls. There are also worries about their impact on bone health, potentially leading to weaker bones and an increased risk of fractures. Current methods struggle to predict which patients are most susceptible to these adverse effects, making it difficult to tailor preventative strategies. This study aims to utilize advanced medical imaging to identify early muscle and bone changes induced by these drugs, enabling better risk prediction and personalized patient management.
