BPC 157 Shows Promise in Rat Model of Schizophrenia's Negative Symptoms

BPC 157, L-NAME, L-Arginine, NO-Relation, in the Suited Rat Ketamine Models Resembling "Negative-Like" Symptoms of Schizophrenia.

Background

Schizophrenia is a severe chronic mental disorder characterized by a range of symptoms, including positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, delusions), cognitive deficits, and particularly challenging negative symptoms such as apathy, social withdrawal, and anhedonia. Current antipsychotic medications primarily target positive symptoms, leaving negative symptoms largely untreated and significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Animal models, like the ketamine model, are crucial for understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of these symptoms and testing novel therapies. Ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, can induce schizophrenia-like behaviors in rodents, including deficits resembling negative symptoms. This study addresses the critical knowledge gap in effective treatments for schizophrenia's debilitating negative symptoms by exploring the therapeutic potential of BPC 157 and its interaction with the nitric oxide (NO) system.
